2. August - European Holocaust-Memorial Day for Sinti and Roma

Every year on 2 August, the Ravensbrück Memorial commemorates the Nazi genocide of the Sinti and Roma. This day commemorates the approximately 500,000 Sinti and Roma who were persecuted and murdered during the Nazi regime. The day of remembrance marks the liquidation of the so-called ‘Gypsy family camp’ in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 2 August 1944, when around 4,300 imprisoned Sinti and Roma - including many women and children - were murdered by the SS. Since 2015, 2 August has been a central European day of remembrance to commemorate the victims of the Porajmos, the organised murder of Sinti and Roma by the National Socialists.

Together with civil society partners, we organise commemorative events, discussions with contemporary witnesses and themed tours to keep the memory of the victims of the genocide alive and carry it forward. 2 August is an integral part of our year of remembrance and creates a space for pause and reflection.
